Thinking about Christmas gifts and don't know what to give? Give the gift of NAC! Prepare a greeting card, wrap it up in a big box (if you so desire), and when the recipient opens the box and reads the card it should read something like this:
"Merry Christmas! I've secured time-off from work and plane tickets or saved money for gas just so that you and/or the family can attend the North American Convention of the Church of God this upcoming June 24-29!"
It could be a the best Christmas gift you've ever given. Why not? Do you know that God works in incredible ways during Camp Meeting and that he might use the worship services, teaching, conferences, and/or people you with whom you fellowship to change your life for the good and forever? He's done it before, and He'll do it again!
Give the gift of NAC this Christmas! You'll be glad you did this Christmas, and again come summertime!
And, yes, the photo above is from NAC (2008)!

I, the NAC ChoGger, am so excited about this year's North American Convention of the Church of God. Though it may be Christmastime, it's hard not to recall the wonderful memories of the many years I have attended. Wouldn't it be terrific if you could join me at this year's convention as we celebrate the 125th year of this Church of God Camp Meeting! And the theme that will pervade the events during the convention, Permeate! Engaging every individual, church, and agency in the Great Commandments (Matt. 22:37-39) is the kind of theme that has the potential to really shake things up for the good! Imagine--the church inspired to love the world and show them the love of God! The opportunity for souls to be saved and total transformation to take place is truly exciting.
Have you registered for NAC 2011, June 24-29? Registration information (by mail only at the moment--online to come soon) is available to you by clicking here.
In other news...Praise God! Global Missions of the Church of God is rejoicing and thanking God for answered prayer today! Missionaries Ernie and Lori Nicholas have reached 100 percent of their Living Link budget and are ready to head to Kenya! They will go to Missionary Training International in January. In early February, they will leave for KIST (Kenya International School of Theology). Continue to keep them in your prayers as they make their final preparations!

Why should you plan NOW to attend the North American Convention of the Church of God in Anderson, Indiana?
- Because there's no time like the present!
- Because you won't inadvertently schedule another event or trip from June 24-29
- Because your workplace may require you to schedule vacation time in advance
- Because it will mean one less thing to do later
- Because the theme of NAC 2011 is Permeate! and you won't want to miss this revolutionary emphasis on tangibly expressing the love of Christ to the world around you
- Because the transformation of culture by being the body of Christ is actually happening and you can be a witness of this from a continental perspective
- Because world-recognized and acclaimed Christian author and speaker, Stephen Arterburn, will present a powerful message during Camp Meeting
- Because the NAC ChoGger will be compiling an ever-growing list of reasons why you should plan now to attend, and why you should attend, NAC 2011
You can register by mail TODAY! See the North American Convention of the Church of God registration page online by clicking here.

Fred Hall, beloved singer and saint of LIVE Ministries (Laypeople in Vital Exchange), passed away on October 29. He often sang at the LIVE Tent (the red-and-white striped tent) during Camp Meeting. He also sang for LIVE Weekends, and had many favorites, including "Just Tell Them When You Saw Me, I Was On My Way..."
Speaking of the freestanding Church of God organization, LIVE Ministries, Gary Campbell was recently announced as the CEO to fill the retiring Gary Cowles' spot. He will begin training with Cowles on January 1.
Deanna and Scott Compton have been appointed to serve as MAPs, Missionary Apprentice Program personnel. They will go to Tanzania on November 2.
Church of God Ministries continues to work to be more efficient in its use of ministry dollars. By eliminating old records in its database, undeliverable mail will be a rare problem, and thus, paying for undeliverable mail won't happen very often anymore. It's another way to be FREE (Strategic Value Three) from financial bondage, and CHOG Ministries is happy to lead by example!

God is using Church of God Ministries in some powerful ways.
- Nearly 4,700 youth attended the International Youth Convention in Orlando, Florida this summer. Of that number, 550 expressed feeling a call to full-time vocational ministry.
- The North American Convention of the Church of God saw attendance slightly down from 2009, but online participation (watching live streaming video) set new records!
- 100+ ministry leaders, including area administrators, credentialling personnel, pastors, etc. attended the Credentials Congress just over a month ago. God moved in a mighty way.
- The CHOG Ministry Connector (chogministryconnector.com) was created this year and very practically assists churches needing pastors and pastors seeking churches.
- Disaster Relief continues in Haiti after the devastating earthquake: $755,000 has been donated so far to the effort and 140 homes have been constructed by more than 30 work teams from local churches across the country.
- SHAPE (Sustaining Health and Pastoral Excellence) are benefitting pastors and their families like never before. Eleven regions currently use this program and three more will be added soon.
- The Church of God Foundation is leaving a legacy on future ministry and disbursed funds to Church of God colleges and universities this summer.
- Focus 40, forty days of prayer and fasting leading up to Easter 2011 (March 16-April 24), will provide an opportunity for churches and invididuals to unite in transformative prayer and fasting. Let's see what God will do!
And there's so much more! Keep praying for Church of God Ministries and the entire Reformation Movement! God will bring transformation!

There is a new page on Facebook. It's the official fan page of The North American Convention of the Church of God. This is not the "event" page for the 2011 NAC; it's just the page that fans of Camp Meeting can "like." There are about 150 photos and counting! Some are from many years ago.
The next world conference of the Church of God is going to be in June of 2013. It's now called the Global Gathering, and it's going to be a huge deal. The theme: Standing Together: Being the Body of Christ in a Changing World. Plan WAY ahead to attend this event. There will be at least one representative from every single nation on the planet in which there is a Church of God presence. That means represenatives from about 90 countries! The event will take place AS the NAC of 2013, so it won't look like a normal NAC. But this is just fine, because it's going to be something unique and powerful and big that does not happen very often. There will be massive worship services, discussions on world issues that effect the whole church, high-profile speakers, and on Sunday during the event there will be twelve hours straight of different language worship services! This will be a gathering of the saints of God like never before! The Church of God will demonstrate to the world unity at its best in Jesus Christ!

The NAC ChoGger (that's me, whoever I am), has worked tirelessly the past two days to make the Church of God more efficient in its use of funds. Yes, he has sorted through mailings of Communion Together that have returned undeliverable (which costs the Church of God money) and has corrected outdated addresses and other information. Now, many who have not been receiving Communion Together (a great ministry resource, by the way), but should have been, will begin receiving them again! And the Church of God will be charged for fewer undeliverable periodicals. Hooray! :)
The Church of God in Chelybinsk, Russia (leaders pictured above), launched a new site on 10-10-10. Many churches have used October 10 and its rare "abbreviation" to market exciting happenings. Over a million people inhabit this city, and the ministry is being blessed by God. Pastor Kolekov says, "Thank you for your prayers! Everything went wonderful! Praise the Lord!"
At least one person got saved in the service, and new people visited. Please keep the mission work of the Church of God in your prayers. Amen!

Meetings of the NAC Task Force and one of the Transformation Teams are being held this week in Anderson. The theme for the 125th (yes, 125 years of Camp Meeting!) North American Convention is going to be Permeate! Engaging every individual, church, and agency in the Great Commandments (Matthew 22:37-39). It is Strategic Value Two of the Church of God. Through the Five Strategic Values, the Church of God seeks to transform the culture by being the body of Christ!
The other Strategic Values are as follows:
Ignite! Revitalizing the Great Commission (Matt. 28:18-20) in the life of every individual, church, and agency.
Free! Committing to stewardship principles (Matt. 6:33) leading to a flexible ministry future and the management of debt (debt-free as the goal) for every individual, church, and agency.
Cultivate! Nurturing the spiritual gifts (1 Cor. 12:1-7) of every individual, church, and agency.
Refresh! Renewing our efforts toward relational connectivity and identity (John 17:21-22) for every individual, church, and agency of the Church of God.
Transformation cannot take place without an emphasis on these values. God will bless the Church of God, but transformation and revival must begin on a personal level. Just imagine what God can and will do when His people commit to these values spelled out throughout His holy Word!

The NAC Task Force will be meeting along with the Transformation Teams in Anderson next week. This week, Church of God Ministries staff reviewed NAC 2010 and discussed what went well and what didn't go so well. In this manner, Church of God Ministries is continually seeking improvement of the Camp Meeting experience.
There are exciting things planned for this upcoming NAC, as well as NAC 2012. In 2013, you should also plan ahead to attend the Global Gathering of the Church of God in June. The theme is Standing Together! (to transform the culture). It will be very exciting and we look forward to seeing God do some miraculous things among the people who attend and who either tune in via the Internet or participate in simultaneous worship services around the world. Much has yet to be finalized, but this will be a World Conference unlike any other.
God can do wonderful things through the Church of God, even into the future. We must stand together. We must be united against our spiritual enemies and united for Christ and each other. It may sound like an old Church of God doctrine, but there is no question that the Church is stronger when without division. Let's unite!
Click here to watch Curt Ferrell (South Memorial Church of God, New Castle, Indiana) sing a song about the power of God unleashed among a united church. Folks, we have got to unite! It's not going to be easy, but it's a must if we want to see God transform the culture and the Church of God! Catch the spirit, and let's see this transformation come to fruition! It's called "One Body, One Spirit, One Lord." This YouTube video is a performance at the North American Convention of the Church of God in 2008.

This week I have begun to receive assignments from PCS (Publishing and Creative Services) at Church of God Ministries. So now I do administrative work for the Executive Office, Communications, and PCS. I'm also available to help with administrative duties for ITS (Information Technology Services). Beyond that, I get to do what I love--communications! Writing, proofreading, editing, research, interviewing, promotion, and attempting to market Church of God Ministries services as best as I can.
Silent Blessings, a free-standing ministry organization run by Church of God people, is holding classes for the public to learn American Sign Language. From October 12 through December 14, on Tuesday evenings at the Silent Blessings offices, they will hold two hour evening classes for a small registration and book fee. For more information, contact judy@silentblessings.org. The deadline to register is October 5.
Silent Blessings is located one floor below Church of God Ministries. They are an incredible ministry to the deaf. They do many things, but I want to point out that they produce a television program for deaf children--and all the speaking is also signed. It's called Dr. Wonder's Workshop, and I accidentally stumbled upon it on one of the Christian television networks a couple weeks ago. I was inspired and touched to see that deaf kids could enjoy, hear about Jesus, and ministered to through this program. The characters are colorful and exhibit lots of humor, which is important for keeping kids' attention. I'm glad that they are reaching out to the deaf, and I'm thankful that God has blessed this ministry.

Sidewalk Prophets, a contemporary Christian band that has played for the youth at the North American Convention of the Church of God (Camp Meeting), had a concert today during Anderson University's chapel. The two founders of the group are graduates of AU. They have recently won a Dove Award and have had two major recent hits on the radio, "The Words I Would Say" and "You Can Have Me." I took my lunch break to go hear them in Reardon Auditorium, since it is just across the parking lot from Church of God Ministries. It was an excellent, worship-filled concert!
The Dormers, new Church of God missionaries to Kenya, have now reached 100 percent of their Living Link budget and 100 percent of their start-up costs. They are now free to leave for Kenya and will begin their work in November. Congratulations to them, and may God bless their work for the Kingdom!

Each morning at Church of God Ministries begins with a short devotion, sharing of praises and prayer concerns, and prayer. It's a beautiful thing, and it sets the tone for the rest of the work day. We want God to bless the work that we do, and we ask Him to do that during what we call Prayer Circle. Yesterday, we did something the assigned devotional leader may choose to lead us to do--we sang! "For the Beauty of the Earth," the classic and beloved hymn. Church of God Ministries staff surely can sing, and in parts!
Today, during the prayer circle, we learned that Sam Dunbar, beloved leader in the Church of God, passed away last night. I met him once at a meeting of Church of God pastors in Michigan. I also recall seeing him speak a few words, likely for an offering, at NAC (Camp Meeting) one year. He was the pastor of the Saint Louis, Michigan Church of God and prior to that, served as an Area Administrator in Oregon. Thank God for the hope of heaven!
The photo shows Pastor Sam Dunbar (pictured right) at a fun community event held at the Saint Louis Church of God in Michigan (best photo I could locate).

Anderson, Indiana got some much-needed rain today. Yes, it's true that Indiana gets much more rain than Arizona and other desert locales, but the grass had turned brown here, and that's not what we're used to seeing!
Anybody like to crochet? I remember when I was younger that my grandmother showed me how to crochet and I even took part in doing some of it. The things that you can create can be pretty incredible. I enjoyed seeing how crochet could be used to make real, cool art.
Bishop Milton Grannum, who spoke at NAC (Camp Meeting) two years ago, also pastors the New Covenant Church of God in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His church has a group of ladies who get together to crochet. They're called the Crocheting Angels and they love to use their talents for the glory of the Lord. Last year they decided to support orphans who lost family members due to AIDS.
The Crocheting Angels made 400 hats "with love" to be sent to orphans in Swaziland, which regularly faces bitterly cold winters. Thank you Mattie Jones, Kim Stanley, Sharm Anderson, Gwen Beard, Emely LaBelle, May Tailafourro, Carol Sampson, and Carole Rowe for showing the love of Christ to children who so desperately need it!

I'm learning more and more about standard operating procedures and protocols at Church of God Ministries. There are ways to go about getting things done--for example, getting graphics created for text, submitting proposals for upcoming events, and including all the right personnel in decision-making. I'm happy to learn and apply it so that Church of God Ministries can be efficient in ministry work. Sometimes it may feel like work, but the ministry that is produced is worth the effort!
The Ministries Council is meeting with Dr. Duncan on the West Coast (Portland) and they also had a leadership rally. I'm excited to hear how the event went and what good things God has in mind for the Church of God reformation movement now and into the future!
Speaking of the West Coast, Mt. Scott Church of God in Portland, Oregon, is one church (I'm sure only one of several churches) who will be starting rehearsals for a musical called "Life School Musical"--no doubt a spin-off of the ever-popular "High School Musical." What a great idea, to incorporate something familiar to the culture into something that communicates the message of Jesus Christ! And, even better, as the church web page states, "This is not just a Mt. Scott Church kids musical--we are inviting VBS families, and encourage you to invite your neighbors and friends who don't attend another church." So they're involving the community, too!

On Friday, I was out of the office, ill with a cold. I've not had a cold so bad in a few years. But God healed me quickly, and just in time to be able to lead singing at Main Street Church of God in Anderson on Sunday. In fact, my voice was stronger than usual during the service! I'm happy to be back at Church of God Ministries today.
Last Thursday, I spent much of my day on the phone conducting interviews with people across the country who have good information to provide for several of the articles that I'm currently writing or have just submitted today. I really enjoyed talking with Pastor Mark Krenz, from the ONE Community Church (emphasis on "one") in Arizona. His start-up church has been incredibly successful and I wanted to know why--not just to publish for the world to see, but for my personal minstry. He emphasized community invovlement and making church comfortable for those who are not used to it. He intentionally advertises ONE as "a church for people who don't like church." The amazing thing is that this kind of marketing your church can be done without compromising the message of the Gospel. The illustration that has stuck in my mind is how a Christian might feel walking into a Islamic mosque for the first time. Wow! I think I would try to avoid it at all costs! That's how unchurched people probably feel.
What strategies can we adopt to reach the unchurched where they are, without compromising message? That's the question, and I think it's one that the church can answer in a variety of healthy ways!
Stay tuned, this article about Krenz and ONE Community Church will be published at http://www.chog.org/ in the next few weeks!
The above pictures shows Pastor Mark Krenz and the church--when they were meeting at a sports bar!

I've been working on an article about a mission trip that Spread the Word is planning for mid-October. Several members of the Youth Ministry Team and the Youth Network for the Church of God will be traveling to Paraguay. Paraguay has been a recipient of some of the funds generated by Spread the Word, an world-evangelism tool which started in 2002 at the Denver IYC. Spread the Word was begun to make IYC more than an event--something that would be a lifestyle, or in the words of Pastor Mark Shaner (of East Side Church of God in Anderson, Indiana), "a part of our DNA" of ministry. While youth ministry in the Church of God may have been focussed around the event that is IYC, youth leadership in the Church of God seeks to make national youth ministry lasting and continuous.
So, I got to thinking. If IYC can become more than an event, can NAC? If IYC is the epitomy of youth ministry in the Church of God (and it clearly is), then couldn't we assume that NAC is the epitomy of adult ministry in the Church of God? After all, NAC (Camp Meeting) seems to be the one, annual uniting symbol of the Church of God in North America. IYC wants to be more than just "event-oriented" and instead a lifestyle or part of our DNA. Couldn't NAC do the same thing? Couldn't the unity and the spiritual rejuvenation and the challenge to go and make disciples that we experience each year at NAC last throughout the year? Can we take it back to our local churches? Can we bring it into our communities and take it around the world?
While Church of God Ministries serves as the primary "ministry arm" for the General Assembly, could NAC--the people of the Church of God who attend this annual event--make a lasting impact on from the local level on up? Could NAC be a "brand," not in the negative sense, but as a symbol of unity within the Church of God and an organization that could keep encouraging the saints year-round?
Kid's Place is making an attempt at just this. Kid's Place director, Michelle Parker, and other Kid's Place national assistants, are attempting to bring Kid's Place programming to the local church. Why keep such a great thing at NAC? That's their big question, and it has already driven them to implement Kid's Place programming methods at one Vacation Bible School at the First Church of God in Meridian, Mississippi. Not only is Kid's Place of NAC goint out to where the people are, but also these ministers are touching the lives of at-risk youth.
So, why keep NAC at the event that is NAC in Anderson? Let's bring it back home with us each year. It may not be the complete answer to a declining NAC, but perhaps it would be a start in the positive direction!
The picture above shows Kid's Place away from Anderson--in Mississippi.

"Trolling." It's how David Farlow, Chief of Strategic Communications at Church of God Ministries, refers to scouring the world for fascinating, compelling, or spiritually-important news relating to the Church of God. Of course, this is accomplished primarily by searching the Internet (visiting web sites of churches and state or district sites, etc.). Then, when something is found, we either find a way to publish it as-is or package it so that it's print-ready.
Like I've stated before, it's important that the broader church hear about what God is doing in local churches around the world. This is one way to get the message out.
I've found or have been assigned about seven article topics to pursue. One has been written this week (other time has been devoted to Ministries Council meeting preparation). For each of the remaining articles, I have conducted the preliminary work: sending out interview questions to the appropriate persons, filing responses accordingly, researching the topic, editing existing matierial--I love it! I love writing, especially when the story will bless the reader. And these stories surely will!
Yesterday, I met with Dr. Duncan and Doris Dale to continue to plan the World Conference of June 2013--now called THE GLOBAL GATHERING! Friends, this is going to be very exciting. I recommend marking the entire month free of June 2013 so that you can be sure to get to Anderson for this event. It will be like nothing you've ever experienced! God is gonna move in a mighty way!
There has not been much rain here in central Indiana lately. When Bethany and I arrived from Arizona, everything was very green and we had heavy rain every few days. Now the much of the grass has turned brown and I hear that August was one of the driest on record. I think Phoenix had more rain than Anderson in August!
Speaking of rain and Arizona. The playground West Side Church of God apparently had some storm debris and/or damage from a recent Monsoon thunderstorm. Mike Hodges, the pastor, said on his Facebook status that he thanks Dan Eastman and Bill Brock for cleaning up and repairing the mess. Hooray for good men of God. Folks, I will always have a connection to the Arizona churches, just face it. So I will report their good news when I hear it, even it if it may seem trivial. God is good!
Wednesday, September 1, 2010

The past few days, I've been busy working with the Executive Assistant to prepare a central document which the Ministries Council can refer to for reviews of the "Policy Governance" system which basically manages the operations at Church of God Ministries. Church of God Ministries is the "ministry arm" of the Church of God, the way that the General Assembly of the Church of God (represenatives from the individual churches gathered together) accomplishes day-to-day ministry tasks. It's a lot of work, but it's necessary to keep things flowing. Most people do not see behind the scenes as to all the work that must be done, but if they did, they would see why ministry dollars are directed toward administrative tasks.
Yesterday, CBH (Christians Broadcasting Hope) unveiled a new television monitor which will not only allow the public to more easily be able to see what kind of work is produced there, but also to expand CBH capabilities with ministry. CBH is exploring more and more the possibilities that video can have in ministry. What was once primarily about radio may have video on the horizon, who knows?!
The picture shows Jim Lyon, host of CBH Viewpoint (the Church of God broadcast in English).

God is doing some incredible things throughout the Church of God. God is doing some incredible things through Church of God Ministries, essentially the ministry arm of the General Assembly of the Church of God. It is important that we share what is going on across North America and the world so that the public may see that God is real, and that His work through Church of God Ministries is important. The past couple of days I have been searching web sites of state and regional offices of the Church of God, looking for unique and/or compelling stories of God's work. Many of these stories that I find will be either turned into an article and released onto chog.org or CHOGnews. Other stories that already appear in article format may be published once again, but this time for more saints to read.
I came across this short article about a unique and very visible ministry one local Church of God is doing in Oklahoma:
Heartland Community Church with the guidance of Travis Hanks from the OSU [Oklahoma State University] extension planned and planted a community garden. Thirteen families signed up to plan and work the garden and share the harvest. It is an exciting ministry within our church family as we work together. We became visible to the community of Seminole as we transformed the empty half-acre lot that lies in the middle of town. The response to what we are doing has been amazing! It is the first project of this kind in Seminole County and we would like to see more of these gardens spring up in the future, involving other church communities and the community at large.
I found the picture above on the page on Facebook about the garden. This picture shows the Sunday School class and the shed they painted for the garden.

The latest issue of CHOGNews has been sent out via e-mail (the August edition). Do you receive CHOGNews? If you don't, visit www.chog.org/chognews to sign up today!
Interesting "Factoid" from CHOGNews: 85 percent of respondents say that moving all convention activites (Camp Meeting) to the "traditional convention grounds" improved their experience.
I hear that the Credentials Congress is taking place in Indianapolis.
There's an article in the August CHOGNews about Barney Warren's hymn, "Joy Unspeakable." In the past year or two, Todd Agnew, contemporary Christian recording artist made his own rendition of the song, using Warren's verses. It has some success on the Billboard Christian Songs chart, as well as much radio airtime. The article is also on the Church of God web site, and can be found with the news articles. It's entitled, "Heritage Song Resurrected."

Much of today in the office (Anderson) has been preparing articles and design for the upcoming Church of God Foundation newsletter. See chogfoundation.org for more details--it's a great way to direct your giving and leave a legacy of love for God's church!News from the Church of God in Arizona! A good story I found:
"From Gangs to Jobs" (posted from azchog.org)
Natividad Mendoza is a licensed Church of God pastor who is Executive Director of a very unique ministry, From Gangs to Jobs. FGTJ is an inner city ministry whose mission is to provide opportunities for disenfranchised young men to find a hope and a future. This is accomplished through caring relationships, skill building, and job placement. FGTJ targets young men (ages 16-24) who are at risk and/or active gang members, some who have been incarcerated or on parole. The motto is that if we believe in a youth, hope in them, walk with them, then they will have a greater chance for success. The ministry is housed in a facility in south Phoenix, Arizona. It is in need of a bathroom to make it fully operational. Needed are materials, skills, volunteering for a mentoring relationship, job connections, teaching, and ministry funding. Natividad may be contacted at natividad@fromgangs2jobs.com. The website is fromgangs2jobs.com. The above photo shows graduates from the program and several board members at the graduation ceremony at Bridge Community Church of God in Laveen, Arizona in early spring.

Welcome to "The NAC ChoGger!"
Friends,
Welcome to The NAC ChoGger! Why "The NAC ChoGger?" Because I love NAC (the North American Convention of the Church of God, a.k.a. Church of God Camp Meeting, a.k.a. Anderson Camp Meeting). In 2009, I created my first blog, http://www.nac2009.blogspot.com/. My assignment as an intern in the communications department at Church of God Ministries was to promote NAC through strategic communications. I was all too eager to complete this task, for I LOVE Camp Meeting!
While there have been many changes over the years (from before I was around to remember), and there most certainly will be changes in the future, NAC has served many purposes within the Church of God. One of my favorites is the gathering together of saints from around the world in a magnificent show of unity in Christ. I love the worship, the teaching, the preaching, and the fellowship! I look forward to see how God may use NAC in the future to advance His kingdom, and I know that I want to be there each step of the way.
I also love the Church of God reformation movement. I am interested in enhancing communication techniques so that the word can get out as to what God is doing through the Church of God movement as a whole, down to the individual churches and laypeople. As it is convenient, I will be post articles and news items, devotions, press releases, and opinion pieces in this blog. They may or may not have anything to do with the Church of God (Anderson, Indiana), but more often than not, they will be related in some manner. Hopefully for some of you, this blog may help you feel more in touch with what's going on in the Church of God around the globe and perhaps even at the Church of God Ministries office in Anderson. Connectivity, unity, relational holiness--whatever you want to call it, I'm all for it! :)
